What this amendment would do
SA 5843, submitted by Mr. Warnock, aims to add a section to bill S. 4784 regarding radon testing of military housing owned or controlled by the Federal Government.
The amendment requires the following:
-
Reporting: The Secretary of Defense must provide a report to congressional defense committees within one year identifying Department of Defense installations with government-owned or controlled housing that should be monitored for radon levels at or above the Environmental Protection Agency action level. This includes installations from a specific April 30, 2020, report.
-
Testing Standards: Military department secretaries must create radon testing procedures that follow national consensus standards and Federal regulations. To keep radon levels below Environmental Protection Agency recommendations, they must use:
- Regular testing (at least once every five years for all housing, and once every two years for housing above recommended levels until reduced).
- Or the installation of monitoring equipment.
-
Mitigation Notification: If testing shows a housing unit needs radon mitigation to meet Environmental Protection Agency recommendations, the head of the installation must send a mitigation plan to the Secretary of the military department within seven days of that determination.
