What this amendment would do
As your legislative analyst, let's break down what Senator Merkley is trying to do here with SA 584. Keeping our officials accountable means looking at how rules affect everyday working people, like our farmers.
Purpose and Changes
-
This amendment adds a new point of order to the Senate rules.
-
Its main goal is to stop the Senate from considering any legislation, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that would increase costs for United States farmers or increase barriers to exporting American agricultural products.
-
To get around this rule, it would take a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn to waive or suspend it, or to sustain an appeal of the Chair's ruling.
