What this amendment would do
SA 5835 is an amendment proposed by Ms. Rosen and Mr. Cramer to be added to bill S. 4784.
The purpose of this amendment is to require the Secretaries of the military departments, with consultation from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, to create a status identifier or equivalent recognition for remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) crew members. This applies to those who perform operations in direct support of combat missions.
The goal of this change is to:
- Establish a way to denote combat participation for RPA crew members.
- Allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to give appropriate consideration when administering benefits and services for combat-related service, similar to how traditional combat designators are handled.
The text also states that this does not require the Department of Defense to categorize this service as equivalent to being physically present in a combat zone.
