What this amendment would do
Mr. Merkley submitted the amendment numbered SA 583 to the concurrent resolution S. Con. Res. 7. The purpose of this amendment is to hold our officials accountable by establishing a point of order against raising the cost of child care.
Here is what the amendment aims to add to the bill:
- It makes it out of order in the Senate to consider any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that reduces funding to support child care access and affordability.
- It states that this rule can only be waived or suspended in the Senate by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members, duly chosen and sworn.
- It requires an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members of the Senate, duly chosen and sworn, to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on a point of order raised under this rule.
