What this amendment would do

SA 5829 is an amendment proposed by Mr. King and Mr. Cramer to bill S. 4784. Its purpose is to add a requirement for a standardized presentation to promote benefits available to veterans during preseparation counseling under the Transition Assistance Program.

The amendment aims to add the following requirements to the bill:

  • The presentation must be reviewed and approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and veterans service organizations that provide claims assistance under the benefits delivery at discharge program.
  • The presentation must be submitted to the Senate and House Committees on Veterans' Affairs for review at least 90 days before it starts.
  • It must include information on how a veterans service organization can help a member file a claim, but it cannot encourage joining a specific organization.
  • The presentation cannot last longer than one hour.
  • Where available, the presentation should include participation from a recognized veterans service organization representative or an authorized individual.

Additionally, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs must provide an annual report to the Senate and House Committees on Veterans' Affairs. This report will identify participating veterans service organizations, the number of service members who attended the presentations, and any recommendations for changes.
