What this amendment would do
The purpose of this amendment to bill S. 567 is to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the First Rhode Island Regiment for their dedicated service during the Revolutionary War.
This amendment aims to change the bill by striking all text after the enacting clause and inserting new sections that:
- Provide findings on the history of the First Rhode Island Regiment, noting it was among the first units in American History to recruit men of every race and ethnicity, including those of African heritage and Indigenous descent.
- Authorize the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate to arrange for a single gold medal to be awarded collectively to the Regiment.
- Direct the Secretary of the Treasury to design and strike the medal.
- Designate the Rhode Island State Library as the recipient of the medal for display and research.
- Allow for the striking and sale of duplicate bronze medals to cover costs.
- Establish the legal status of the medals as national medals and numismatic items.
- Authorize the use of the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund to pay for the medals.
