What this amendment would do

SA 5805, submitted by Mr. Cassidy, aims to add a section to bill S. 2 regarding a fund established by the Attorney General on May 18, 2026.

The purpose of this amendment is to provide payments to eligible claimants. These are individuals who:

  • Served as active duty law enforcement officers defending the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, and suffered death, economic loss, or noneconomic loss (including suicide or other deaths reasonably attributable to that service).
  • Are personal representatives of a decedent who meets the above criteria and file a claim on their behalf.

The amendment adds the following details:

  • The fund is named the Anti-Weaponization Fund.
  • It authorizes an appropriation of $100,000,000 to the fund.
  • The maximum payment for each eligible claimant is $1,000,000.
  • Funds cannot be used for any purpose other than making lump sum payments to eligible claimants.
  • Amounts in the fund cannot be obligated on or after October 1, 2035, and any remaining balances will be transferred to the Judgment Fund of the Department of Justice.
