What this amendment would do
SA 5758, submitted by Mr. Wyden, aims to stop the Attorney General from ordering or agreeing to broad releases of tax claims.
The amendment specifically prohibits the release of:
-
All tax claims that are pending or could have been pending for the President, the President's immediate relatives, or any entity controlled by the President or his immediate relatives.
-
Any tax claim not related to underlying matters referred to the Department of Justice by the Secretary of the Treasury or the Secretary's delegate.
Additionally, this amendment makes any such orders or agreements made before the Act's enactment null and void. It also states that nothing in the section implies the Attorney General has the authority to resolve tax matters.
