What this amendment would do
SA 5739, submitted by Mr. Welch, aims to add a section to bill S. 2 that prohibits certain individuals from working for the government.
The amendment is based on the following findings:
- On January 6, 2021, rioters attacked Congress and law enforcement to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
- Many participants in the attack pled guilty or were found guilty of crimes.
- These individuals received pardons from the President on January 20, 2025.
The purpose of this amendment is to ensure that any individual convicted by a U.S. court for actions related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol is:
- Ineligible for any employment or financial engagement with any U.S. government agency, department, office, or component.
- Denied access to any U.S. government property.
