What this amendment would do
SA 5624, submitted by Mr. Lujan, aims to add a new title to bill S. 2 regarding the Reallocation of Appropriations.
The purpose of this amendment is to provide a one-time, tax-free bonus to specific groups by shifting funds. It aims to add the following:
-
Funding for Bonuses: It appropriates $30,000,000,000 to the Secretary of Defense for fiscal year 2026 to give bonuses to:
- Members of the Armed Forces on active duty or full-time National Guard duty.
- Veterans with a disability rating of at least 10 percent from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
-
Tax Status: These bonuses will not be counted as income under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.
-
Funding Reductions: To support this, the amendment reduces appropriations for other agencies:
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection: Reductions of $7,500,000,000 from section 101 and $7,500,000,000 from section 201.
- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement: Reductions of $7,500,000,000 from section 102 and $7,500,000,000 from section 202.
