What this amendment would do
SA 5588, submitted by Mr. Galleggo, aims to protect consumers from paying for the growth of data centers.
The amendment adds a section titled "PROTECTING CONSUMERS FROM BEARING THE COSTS OF RAPID DATA CENTER EXPANSION."
It changes the rules for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by stating that, starting on the date the Act is enacted, the commission cannot approve any:
- Tariff
- Rate
- Charge
That would shift costs from a data center to residential or small commercial ratepayers. This includes costs for transmission or grid upgrades needed to connect a data center to the electric grid.
