What this amendment would do
As folks down at the Capitol keep an eye on our budget, Mr. Welch put forward an amendment, known as SA 545, to the concurrent resolution for the 2025 fiscal year. If we want to hold our elected officials accountable, it helps to look at what they are trying to put into the rules.
What It Changes
- This amendment adds a brand new rule to the Senate, called a point of order.
- It aims to stop the Senate from considering certain reconciliation bills, joint resolutions, or related amendments unless they increase the corporate tax rate to 24 percent.
- To get around this rule and pass something that doesn't raise the corporate tax rate to 24 percent, it would take a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn in.
