What this amendment would do
Mr. Bennet submitted this amendment, numbered SA 536, for the fiscal year 2025 congressional budget resolution. It creates a deficit-neutral reserve fund focused on protecting rural communities from increases in energy costs.
Its Purpose and Changes
The purpose is to let the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget adjust financial levels and rules for legislation dealing with energy in rural communities. Specifically, it aims to allow changes for legislation that could do the following:
- Prohibit any action that leads to increased energy costs for farms, small businesses, or rural households.
- Prohibit any reduction in funding for rural energy programs.
Keeping Us Accountable
As folks working for you in Congress, we have to make sure our elected officials are held accountable. This amendment has a strict rule: any legislation using this fund would not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034. That means it is designed not to add to the national debt while trying to protect hardworking people in rural areas from paying more for their energy.
