Ms. Klobuchar submitted SA 508, which aims to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund relating to the tax treatment of mileage for members of the Armed Forces.

What It Aims to Change or Add

  • It allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to make adjustments and revise allocations for legislation relating to the tax treatment parity of mileage traveled by members of the Armed Forces, including reserve components, while doing their duties.

  • It opens the door to ensure that mileage traveled while performing their duties is treated the exact same way as other business travel under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

  • It may equalize the required distance for deductible travel, as long as the legislation does not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
