What this amendment would do

As folks looking out for the hard-earned money and interests of the American people, we need to keep a close eye on what our elected officials are trying to do with our budget. This amendment, submitted by Mr. Peters as SA 481, deals with the federal budget for fiscal years 2025 through 2034.

Purpose and Changes

  • The main goal of this amendment is to add a deficit-neutral reserve fund to the budget resolution.

  • This fund allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to change budget allocations and make adjustments for future legislation.

  • The purpose of this future legislation must be to ensure the United States automotive industry can outcompete automakers backed by the Government of the People's Republic of China.

  • To achieve this, the amendment mentions supporting incentives for vehicles made in the United States, working closely with allies and trade partners like Canada, or taking action to prevent the importation of vehicles from the People's Republic of China.

  • The catch—and this is where we hold them accountable—is that any legislation passed using this fund must not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
