What this amendment would do
SA 4677, submitted by Mr. Coons, aims to change the law by adding a new section to Section 922 of title 18, United States Code.
The purpose of this amendment is to make it unlawful to sell or dispose of a firearm to any individual unless they provide specific documentary proof of their citizenship or alien status.
The required documentation depends on the individual's status:
-
United States citizens must present documentary proof of citizenship as defined in the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.
-
Aliens lawfully admitted for permanent residence must present documentary evidence of that status, such as a permanent resident card (Form I-551), and a separate document proving residency.
-
Aliens lawfully admitted under a nonimmigrant visa who meet criteria under subsection (y)(2) must present a document showing proof of residency, a photo identification document, and documentation proving they are a lawfully admitted nonimmigrant visa holder meeting those specific criteria.
