What this amendment would do
SA 4519, submitted by Mr. LUJAN, aims to add a section to bill S. 1383 that requires the Comptroller General of the United States to conduct a study on how Federal funding reductions recommended by the Department of Government Efficiency affect specific types of medical research.
The amendment focuses on the following research areas:
- Neurological research, such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and related dementia.
- Cancer research, including basic, translational, and clinical research.
- Pandemic preparedness, involving emerging infectious diseases, vaccine development, surveillance, and public health preparedness.
- HIV/AIDS research, focusing on prevention, treatment, and cure.
- Women's health research, including maternal health and conditions affecting women across their lifespan.
The study must analyze funding changes from the 4-year period before the Act is enacted and assess impacts on:
- Active research projects and clinical trials.
- Workforce capacity for trainees, clinicians, and researchers.
- Innovation and scientific discovery.
- Research institutions in each State.
- Research for service members and veterans regarding cancer and neurological issues.
- U.S. global leadership in biomedical research.
- Patient outcomes, geographic disparities in rural and underserved communities, and delays in life-saving treatments.
The Comptroller General must submit a report with these findings and any appropriate recommendations to Congress within 18 months after the Act is enacted.
