What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Schiff, aims to add a section to bill S. 1383 to create a Senate select committee. The purpose of the Select Committee on Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Disclosures of Related Information, Documents, and Materials is to investigate and study specific activities and government decisions.
Specifically, the committee is tasked with:
-
Investigating if any persons engaged in illegal, improper, or unethical activities by aiding or abetting Ghislaine Maxwell or Jeffrey Epstein in human trafficking or sexual assault.
-
Studying any decisions made by Federal Government employees or officers to fail to disclose, redact, or release documents related to the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
-
Determining if the findings show a need for new laws to prevent similar abuses in the future.
The amendment outlines that the committee will consist of 7 Senators appointed by the majority and minority leaders. It grants the committee authorities to hold hearings, issue subpoenas, and employ personnel. The committee must report its findings to the Senate within 180 days of the Act's enactment and will terminate 60 days after submitting that report.
