What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Scott of Florida, aims to add a section to a previous amendment for bill H.R. 6644. Its purpose is to make sanctuary jurisdictions ineligible to receive certain grant funding.
Sanctuary jurisdictions are defined as any State or political subdivision of a State that has a policy, practice, statute, or ordinance that restricts:
- The exchanging or maintaining of information regarding an individual's immigration status with government entities.
- Complying with lawful requests from the Department of Homeland Security to detain an alien.
The ineligibility for funding only takes effect if the jurisdiction fails to certify to the Secretary of Homeland Security that it is in full compliance with immigration laws.
