What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Hawley, aims to add a requirement for the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency to provide a detailed report regarding the West Lake Landfill Superfund Site in Bridgeton, Missouri.
The purpose of the amendment is to force the EPA to submit a report to the House and Senate Committees on Appropriations within 120 days of the Act's enactment. This report must cover:
-
Remediation and Staffing: Current and projected remediation needs, staffing requirements, and the latest timeline for removing hazardous waste.
-
Drilling Operations: An assessment of whether current drilling is speeding up the pre-excavation process and accurately measuring areas that need remediation.
-
Barriers to Work: Evaluation of delays from potentially responsible parties in agreeing to a consent decree, the ability to hire contractors, and specific staffing needs (such as project management with radiation experience, landfill experts, and construction technical staff) to speed up oversight and document review.
-
Costs and Timelines: An estimate of the total cost for radioactive mitigation and specific timelines for the remedial design plan approval, completion of sampling and contracting, and the final remediation of the site.
-
Community Engagement: A summary of communications and efforts to engage with the local community.
