What this amendment would do

As folks who look out for everyday people, we need to keep a close eye on how our elected officials handle taxes and trade. This amendment, labeled SA 336 and submitted by Ms. Cantwell, deals with the federal budget and aims to protect consumers and small businesses from extra costs.

What It Aims to Change or Add

  • This amendment adds a new rule to the Senate.

  • It creates a point of order in the Senate against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that would put in place a universal tariff or global supplemental tariff.

  • Specifically, it targets tariffs that would increase the costs paid by consumers and small businesses in the United States.

  • To get around this rule, it takes a large vote. The rule can only be waived or suspended in the Senate by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members, duly chosen and sworn.

  • It also takes that same three-fifths vote of the Members to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair if a point of order is raised.
