What this amendment would do
As folks working for the people, we need to keep a close eye on how our elected officials handle our promises to Native Americans. Ms. Smith submitted amendment SA 317 to the concurrent resolution for the 2025 congressional budget.
Purpose and Changes
-
The purpose of this amendment is to add a new point of order in the Senate against harming Indian Tribes or Native Americans.
-
It aims to make it out of order in the Senate to consider any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that would harm Indian Tribes or Native Americans.
-
It also aims to stop any legislation that would in any way reduce services provided under the trust and treaty obligations of the Federal Government to Indian Tribes and Native Americans.
-
Under this change, this new rule can only be waived or suspended, or an appeal of the ruling of the Chair sustained, by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Senators duly chosen and sworn.
