What this amendment would do

Mr. Schiff submitted this amendment to the concurrent resolution for the congressional budget for fiscal year 2025. As folks who care about accountability, we need to know what our elected officials are trying to change.

Purpose and Changes

  • The amendment aims to add a deficit-neutral reserve fund related to protecting taxpayer information.

  • It allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to revise allocations and make adjustments for legislation relating to protecting taxpayer information.

  • It specifically includes prohibiting political appointees and officials from the Department of Government Efficiency from accessing sensitive taxpayer, business, and nonprofit information through Internal Revenue Service systems.

  • The sensitive information protected includes Social Security numbers, bank account information, tax returns, and addresses.

  • Any legislation for this purpose must not increase the deficit over the total periods of fiscal years 2025 through 2029 or fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
