What this amendment would do
Mr. Van Hollen submitted amendment SA 242 to the concurrent resolution on the budget for fiscal year 2025. If we want to hold our elected officials accountable, we need to know what they are trying to change in our laws.
What It Aims to Change
This amendment adds a new rule to the bill, creating a point of order in the Senate. This rule stops the Senate from considering any legislation, resolution, motion, or amendment that would fund the deployment of members of the United States Armed Forces or other U.S. personnel for military operations in Gaza, Panama, or Greenland.
How It Works
Under this rule, it will not be in order in the Senate to fund those specific military operations unless a specific threshold is met. To bypass or waive this rule, it takes a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn. It also takes that same three-fifths vote to sustain an appeal of the Chair's ruling on a point of order raised against such funding.
