What this amendment would do
Mr. Merkley proposed an amendment called the Make Sense Not Cents Act to the bill S. 1582, which is about regulating payment stablecoins.
What the amendment aims to do
- Expresses the Sense of Congress that Congress has the sole authority to coin money and regulate currency.
- Stops the Secretary of the Treasury from minting or issuing any new 1-cent coins.
- Makes technical and conforming changes to update the United States Code and the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.
- Ensures that existing 1-cent coins will still be legal tender for all public and private debts, taxes, public charges, and duties, no matter when they were minted or issued.
