What this amendment would do

As folks who rely on our elected officials to keep things straight, we need to know what our government is working on. Mr. Coons submitted SA 175, which is an amendment about making sure our military stays ready for action.

The purpose of this amendment is to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund. This fund is meant to make sure that when members of the United States Armed Forces are deployed to help with Department of Homeland Security immigration operations, it does not hurt our military readiness.

To make this happen, the amendment aims to allow the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to change certain budget allocations and levels. This can happen for legislation that ensures these deployments do not cause specific problems.

  • Do not require the cancellation or rescheduling of training exercises
  • Do not divert military personnel from operations supporting state wildfire suppression efforts
  • Do not divert funds appropriated by Congress for the Department of Defense for other agencies' operations

All of this is allowed as long as the legislation does not increase the deficit over the total of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
