What this amendment would do

Let's look out for the people who sent us to Washington and keep our elected officials accountable. Mr. Reed, along with Ms. Alsobrooks and Mr. Lujan, put forward an amendment, numbered SA 172, for the 2025 congressional budget resolution.

What the Amendment Aims to Do

This amendment wants to add a new rule to the Senate. Here is what it aims to change:

  • It sets up a point of order in the Senate against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that would reduce Medicare or Medicaid benefits for working-class and middle-income Americans.
  • It makes it so that this rule can only be waived or suspended by a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn.
  • It also requires a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn to sustain an appeal of the Chair's ruling on this point of order.

What Congress actually voted on

One recorded vote has been taken on this amendment.

None of them settled the amendment — every vote so far has been about whether to keep going.
