What this amendment would do

What the Amendment Does

  • Purpose: This amendment, submitted by Mr. Reed, creates a point of order in the Senate to hold our elected officials accountable and protect the food support we rely on.

  • Changes and Additions: It aims to stop the Senate from considering any legislation, resolution, motion, or amendment that would restrict future increases to nutrition assistance benefit amounts based on increased grocery costs, such as limiting future thrifty food plan updates.

  • Waiver and Appeal Rules: To bypass this protection and pass such a restriction, it would take a three-fifths affirmative vote of the Senators chosen and sworn. It also takes that same three-fifths vote to sustain an appeal of the Chair's ruling on this point of order.
