What this amendment would do

Mr. Cornyn, along with Mr. Budd, submitted amendment SA 14 to be proposed to another amendment on the bill S. 5. Common sense tells us we need to keep track of what officials are trying to change here, so let's look at what this adds.

  • The amendment changes the bill to include individuals who are charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or who admit to committing acts of burglary, theft, larceny, shoplifting, assault of a law enforcement officer, or any crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury to another person.

  • It adds a definition section stating that these specific terms, along with serious bodily injury, have the meanings given to them in the jurisdiction where the acts actually happened.

What Congress actually voted on

One recorded vote has been taken on this amendment.

  • The Senate: a vote on a proposed change to the billAmendment Agreed to 70–25

A vote on one change, not on the bill. A bill can collect dozens of these, and losing one does not stop it.
