What this amendment would do

As folks who sent our officials to Washington to look out for us, we need to know what is being proposed with our tax dollars and rules. Senator Hirono, along with Senator Peters, introduced SA 137 to the concurrent resolution for the fiscal year 2025 budget.

The whole point of this amendment is to protect working families. It aims to add a point of order to the Senate rules.

  • It makes it not in order in the Senate to consider any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that increases child care costs for parents.

  • It sets a strict rule that this can only be waived or suspended by a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn.

  • It also requires that same three-fifths vote to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair if a point of order is raised.
