What this amendment would do
senador Merkley introduced this amendment to hold officials accountable for tackling the opioid crisis by focusing on life-saving steps in workplaces. If we want to look out for the good of the working people, this proposal pushes for clear rules on having overdose reversal medicine on hand.
Changes and Additions to the Bill
-
The amendment adds a new section requiring the Secretary of Labor, through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, to issue non-mandatory guidance for employers within 270 days. This guidance covers getting and keeping opioid overdose reversal medication and training employees yearly on how to use it. This applies to general employers, except for the United States Postal Service.
-
It also adds a requirement for mandatory regulations for Federal agencies. Within 270 days, the Secretary of Labor must force every Federal agency to acquire and maintain opioid overdose reversal medication and train their employees every year on how to use it. This includes agencies like the Veterans Health Administration.
