What this amendment would do
Mr. Markey submitted this amendment to keep our elected officials accountable when it comes to funding our public schools. Common sense tells us we need to protect education for our kids, and this proposal sets up a point of order in the Senate to stop any legislation that would cut critical education programs.
What It Aims to Change
This amendment adds a brand new rule to the budget resolution. Specifically, it targets cuts to major programs like the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002, and the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
If anyone tries to push a bill or amendment through the Senate that cuts these critical programs, any Senator can raise an objection. To get around this new rule and pass the cuts anyway, it would take a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn.
