What this amendment would do
As your analyst, let us look at what this amendment is trying to do for the people. Ms. Warren submitted SA 1053, which aims to add a new rule to the Senate. Common sense tells us that people living in federally assisted housing deserve safe places to live.
-
This amendment creates a point of order in the Senate against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that would cut funding or reduce staff needed to perform or oversee housing quality and safety inspections.
-
It aims to protect renters in federally assisted housing from being endangered by those specific cuts to funding or staff.
-
To get around this new rule and allow such a measure to be considered anyway, it would take an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Senators chosen and sworn.
-
That same three-fifths vote would also be required to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair if a point of order is raised.
