What this amendment would do

Mr. Schiff submitted this amendment to the congressional budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2025. As folks we voted for are handling our money and rules, it is important to keep an eye on what they are trying to change.

What The Amendment Aims To Do

  • Creates a fund: The amendment sets up what is called a deficit-neutral reserve fund relating to protecting taxpayer information.

  • Gives budget power: It lets the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate change certain budget allocations and adjustments for legislation that protects taxpayer information.

  • Stops certain people from seeing private data: The legislation can include prohibiting political appointees and officials from the Department of Government Efficiency from accessing sensitive taxpayer, business, and nonprofit information.

  • Protects specific details: The sensitive information includes Social Security numbers, bank account information, tax returns, and addresses through Internal Revenue Service systems, including the Integrated Data Retrieval System.

  • Keeps the budget balanced: The amendment requires that any legislation passed for this purpose would not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
