What this amendment would do
Mr. Paul submitted the amendment to be proposed to the bill S. 5, which requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to take into custody certain aliens. Common sense tells us we need to hold our officials accountable for keeping us safe, and this amendment changes the bill to target specific individuals.
The amendment aims to change the bill by striking certain lines and inserting new provisions. Specifically, it adds rules for aliens who meet certain conditions:
-
Inadmissible and charged or convicted: An alien who is inadmissible under specific sections and is charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or admits to certain offenses like burglary, theft, larceny, shoplifting, assaulting a law enforcement officer, or any crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury.
-
Unlawful presence and voting: An alien who is unlawfully present in the United States and has voted in a Federal election illegally.
-
Definitions and Detainer: The amendment adds definitions for terms based on the local jurisdiction and requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to issue a detainer and quickly take custody of these described aliens if they are not already detained by other officials.
