What this amendment would do
As folks keeping an eye out for the everyday people, we need to know what our elected officials are trying to change in our laws. Mr. Paul submitted SA 86, which is an amendment intended to be proposed to the bill S. 5.
The purpose of this amendment is to change what the Secretary of Homeland Security must do regarding certain aliens. Instead of the original text, this amendment aims to add specific rules for taking certain individuals into custody and issuing detainers.
Here is what the amendment aims to add and change:
- It targets certain aliens who are inadmissible under specific sections of the law.
- It adds people who are charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or admit to committing acts like burglary, theft, larceny, shoplifting, assault of a law enforcement officer, domestic violence, or any crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury.
- It adds individuals who are unlawfully present in the United States and have voted in a Federal election unlawfully.
- It provides clear definitions for these crimes based on where the acts happened.
- It requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to issue a detainer for these individuals and effectively and expeditiously take them into custody if they are not already detained by other officials.
