What this amendment would do

Mrs. Blackburn submitted this amendment to encourage States and local areas to help enforce immigration laws.

The amendment aims to change the bill by cutting off certain funds under section 241(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Specifically, starting one year after the Act is enacted, any State or local government that has a rule, policy, or practice stopping its police officers from helping or cooperating with Federal immigration law enforcement during routine duties will lose these funds.

If a State or local government loses these funds because they do not comply, those funds will be reallocated to States and local areas that do comply.

The amendment also adds a rule stating that nothing in this section requires local law enforcement officials to report or arrest victims or witnesses of a crime.
