What this amendment would do

This amendment is known as the Stop Fentanyl at the Border Act. Its main purpose is to add new funding, reporting rules, and penalties to improve border security and stop illegal drugs.

The amendment aims to add several key changes to the bill:

  • Provide billions of dollars in funding for the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Department of Justice, and the U.S. Marshals Service to enhance border law enforcement, hire staff, and offer bonuses and mental health support.
  • Fund technology improvements and upgrades, such as scanning systems at ports of entry, to increase drug interdiction and processing capabilities.
  • Fund outbound inspection capabilities to disrupt the flow of firearms and currency out of the United States.
  • Require the government to submit reports to Congress regarding border patrol processing coordinators, outbound inspections programs, and scanning technology.
  • Create a new penalty making it unlawful to knowingly and without authorization destroy border barriers or construct structures to evade border controls for financial gain or to help criminal organizations, carrying a fine, imprisonment for not more than 5 years, or both.
