What this amendment would do
Mrs. Shaheen submitted amendment SA 55 to the bill S. 5, which deals with requiring the Secretary of Homeland Security to take into custody aliens charged in the United States with theft.
The amendment aims to add a rule of construction to page 7 of the bill. Specifically, it states that nothing in a specific part of the bill (subparagraph (C)) may be construed to limit the authority of, or impose liability on, any Department or officer of the Federal Government based on a decision to provide humanitarian parole to certain groups.
These groups are Afghan nationals who entered the United States after August 1, 2021, and Ukrainian nationals who entered the United States after February 24, 2022.
