What this amendment would do
This amendment was submitted by Mr. Budd and is also known as the Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement Act of 2025 or the POLICE Act of 2025. It adds a new section to the bill to hold people accountable and protect our communities and officers.
Key Changes to the Bill
The amendment aims to change the law by adding rules regarding the deportation of certain individuals. Specifically, it makes any alien deportable if they have been convicted of, admit to having committed, or admit to committing acts that make up the essential elements of an offense involving the assault of a law enforcement officer.
For this rule to apply, the law enforcement officer must have been assaulted under specific circumstances:
- While engaged in the performance of their official duties
- Because of the performance of their official duties
- Because of their status as a law enforcement officer
The amendment also requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to submit an annual report to Congress and make it publicly available on the Department of Homeland Security website. This report must identify the number of aliens who were deported during the previous fiscal year for assaulting a law enforcement officer.
